Crates
give a pup their own space and assist in house training. I recommend
a wire mesh suitcase style crate that folds down quickly, great for hotels
and visiting relatives - size Large 36"L x 24"W x 27"H, should have a
removable tray. Plastic crate is recommended for
flying or traveling in car, make sure that it is airline approved.
Foldable mesh crates are good for adult dogs. Feed puppy twice a day. Start with 1/2 cup of food with 1/8 cup of warm water poured over to soften. Leave food down for 15 minutes only. A routine feeding schedule will assist house training. If puppy eats all of the food give him a bit more the next feeding. If he doesn't eat it all, give him less next feeding. Avoid foods that contain wheat. More Info Leave fresh water down for puppy during day. No water after 7 p.m. will help puppy make it through the night. Stainless steel dishes are easy to clean. Good idea to make puppy sit for treats. Pounces are delicious treats to assist early training. Use sparingly at first. Excellent treat for toddlers to give puppy upon first introduction. It doesn't take long to run the brush through the puppy. It is good practice to make him stay still for longer and longer periods. Puppy should be brushed at least twice a week. Check for mats by combing through after brushing. Cozy but washable for crate. Start with a small nylon 12" puppy collar. Puppy will grow to needing an 18" collar. I prefer a six foot leather leash and rolled leather collar for an adult dog. Puppy will not be used to a leash yet. Let him drag it around the kitchen to get used to it. For emergency only. May need these to use on the first night if puppy will not settle down. Wrap hot water bottle in a towel and sit clock just outside the crate. Nails grow quickly and need to be trimmed every three weeks or so. Just clip to the quick. If you clip too short the nail will bleed. Apply some powdered quick stop to stop the bleeding. Play foot games with your pup to get them used to having their feet touched. There are several good shampoos on the market. You will also want to use a conditioner to reduce mats. Always brush dog before bathing. I like the Best Shot products. Start with Ultra Wash Shampoo and Ultra Plenish Conditioner. Spray the towel dry dog with Ultravitalizing Mist (spray on conditioner) and blow dry. Between baths, try spraying with One Shot Rinse Waterless shampoo and brush out. Frequent brushing keeps dog clean and healthy. Plus: Be sure to get your copy of the magazine Dogs ANNUAL 2009. There is good information on looking after your puppy and lots of beautiful wheaten puppy photos. Available at Chapters.
